Microsoft has revealed MAI-Realtime, a voice AI model designed to process speech both ways at once. This bidirectional approach lets the system listen and speak simultaneously, creating a smooth, natural flow in conversations instead of the usual back-and-forth pattern.
The model is still in internal preview, with no public testing or benchmarks announced. It promises support for multiple languages and deep integration with Microsoft's productivity tools, likely enhancing Copilot across Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook.
Building a full Voice AI Ecosystem
MAI-Realtime joins Microsoft's broader MAI voice AI stack, which includes MAI-Voice-1 for fast, expressive text-to-speech and MAI-Transcribe-1 for transcribing speech in 25 languages. Together, these components provide a fully owned voice environment, freeing Microsoft from reliance on third-party services like OpenAI’s voice APIs. This shift gives Microsoft more control over costs and future development.
The launch comes after competitors like OpenAI and Google have introduced their own real-time voice solutions, raising the stakes in the race for smooth multilingual voice interaction.
