July 2025, and Ethereum is quietly building a case for a breakout. CoinGlass data shows ETH has averaged more than 10% returns in July historically, beating Bitcoin's roughly 7% average for the same month. That seasonal tailwind is real, and this year it arrives alongside some of the strongest on-chain fundamentals the network has ever printed.

Token Terminal's latest report puts the numbers in stark terms: weekly transaction count has hit a record 18.7 million, while median transaction fees have fallen to an all-time low of $0.008. That combination, peak usage at near-zero cost, is the clearest evidence yet that Ethereum's scaling upgrades are actually working in practice.

Developer momentum is accelerating on top of that. New smart contract deployments are up 192% in recent weeks, with another 57% jump recorded in the past week alone. When builders are shipping at this pace while users are transacting at record volume, the underlying network is doing something right.

All of that would normally be enough to call a breakout. But CryptoQuant's latest report introduces a critical caveat. On Binance, the Perp Futures-to-spot Volume Gap remains elevated even as the Z-score cools, meaning leveraged activity is still running well ahead of spot demand. Much of ETH's recent price action looks driven by perpetual futures, not by long-term holders accumulating coins.

The stablecoin picture complicates things further. Net stablecoin inflows to Binance have surged around 370%, reaching more than $58 million in daily inflows. That sounds bullish, but the capital is sitting on the exchange rather than moving on-chain. Investors are positioning, not deploying.

Binance's Funding Rate has also surged to 200% above its 90-day baseline. That figure, combined with funding rates now 220% above recent norms by some measures, signals that fresh liquidity is being routed into perpetual futures rather than the spot market. use is amplifying the move, not confirming it.

Three signals are converging: builder activity at record highs, stablecoin liquidity queued on exchanges, and funding rates well into overheated territory. The setup is genuinely bullish on the fundamental side, and the broader regulatory uncertainty hanging over crypto markets makes any organic demand signal more valuable than usual. But the missing piece is spot buying from long-term holders. Until that shows up, the $2,000 breakout rests on a foundation of borrowed conviction.
