Now it's handing bots wallets and spending limits, launching a stablecoin payment system designed specifically so AI agents can transact on the web under rules you set. The shift matters because it changes what's possible. You'll be able to fund an AI agent with a budget cap and merchant whitelist without giving it full access to your account. One parent wallet connects to multiple virtual wallets, each with its own limits. Hand a research agent $50 for API calls. Give another one $10 for data lookups. Neither can exceed what you allocated, and neither can reach the other's funds.
How the two wallet types work
Cloudflare built two distinct wallet flavors for different jobs. Account Wallets are yours. You fund them, you control them, you can pull money out anytime. Virtual Wallets live on API keys and belong to the agents you authorize. They run only on what you've given them.
The architecture lets you operate multiple agents independently. Your Account Wallet sits at the top level. You spin up Virtual Wallets beneath it, each with its own spending cap and list of allowed merchants. One agent can't break into another's budget. One bad actor can only burn through the slice you handed it. You maintain the override switch at all times.
These wallets run on the x402 protocol, which is native to HTTP. Your cloudflare.pay handle becomes a human-readable address on the internet. Instead of pasting wallet addresses across chat apps, you send a simple text handle. It's how you'd want payments to work in a web that includes AI commerce.
What ships now, what's still coming
Today you can reserve your cloudflare.pay handle. That's the identity layer. The actual wallet functionality, stablecoin funding, and merchant integrations roll out over the next few months. Cloudflare hasn't named a specific date yet, but the company framed it as a phased launch.
The irony isn't lost. Cloudflare Turnstile blocks automated traffic on thousands of sites. Cloudflare's bot-fight mode is designed to keep agents out. And now Cloudflare is building the economic layer that lets agents move money across those same sites. The company isn't abandoning bot detection. It's adding a channel for authorized agents to operate. Authentication moves from binary (bot or human) to tiered (trusted, delegated, rate-limited).
