Block just lifted its 2026 outlook following a quarter that beat analyst forecasts, driven by strength in Cash App and Square. The fintech company is now running AI across nearly its entire codebase, a shift that's reshaping how its engineers work.

Cash App, the company's flagship consumer payments app, posted better-than-expected numbers. Square, its point-of-sale and small business platform, delivered similarly solid results. Combined, they gave Block enough confidence to raise guidance for next year, signaling management believes momentum will hold.

The AI integration is where things get more interesting. Block said the technology now touches nearly all of its code, meaning developers are writing, debugging, and reviewing software with AI assistance built into their workflows. That's not just a nice-to-have anymore. It's embedded into how the company actually ships products. The message here is subtle but important: AI isn't a side project or a marketing angle. It's woven into the operational fabric.

For a fintech company, this matters. Faster development cycles mean quicker feature releases. Better code quality means fewer bugs hitting production. Both translate to competitive advantages in payments, where execution speed and reliability are table stakes. Block's bet is that this tooling advantage will compound over time.

Whether those raises hit depends on whether Cash App and Square can maintain their momentum through 2026. But for now, Block is walking into next year with better economics and a clearer sense of where AI actually adds value in its business.
