$130.5 million in Bitcoin assets recently shifted by a long-term whale has grabbed market attention. This move, involving 2,000 BTC, signals nuance in holder behavior with implications for both price action and sentiment.
Dissecting the Whale’s Move: Sell or Reposition?
Data from Onchain Lens highlights that after six years of accumulation, one whale transferred 800 BTC valued at $52.2 million to Cumberland for OTC sale. Simultaneously, 1,200 BTC worth $78.3 million was moved to new addresses. This bifurcation matters: the OTC transfer hints at intent to sell without pressuring exchanges directly, while the transfer to fresh wallets suggests the whale is repositioning rather than fully exiting.
The OTC channel typically insulates markets from sudden supply shocks. Yet, such sizable moves can ripple through trader psychology, raising questions about potential near-term headwinds. Despite this, Bitcoin's price action has defied expectations.
Price Action and Momentum Amid Whale Activity
Bitcoin has maintained resilience, hitting a monthly high near $66,314 before a modest retracement. Current trading around $66,195 reflects a daily gain of 3.02%, supported by solid momentum indicators. The Stochastic Momentum Index recently surged to 67 following a bullish crossover, a sign of sustained buying pressure.
on top of that, the Squeeze Momentum Indicator remains positive, indicating that the upward trend that started near $62,000 is intact and gathering strength. If momentum remains firm, Bitcoin could challenge and surpass the $67,000 level en route to a potential $70,000 target.
Emerging Risks: Exchange Inflows and Profit Taking
Even with bullish momentum, caution arises from rising exchange inflows. The Bitcoin Fund Flow Ratio has climbed to $0.06, denoting increased coin movement onto exchanges. Exchange Netflow turning positive, currently at 4,700 BTC, reinforces this trend, as more BTC enters exchanges, increasing liquidity available for selling.
Historically, such inflows precede short-term price corrections. If selling intensifies, momentum might falter, pushing Bitcoin toward support around $64,800. Traders should watch these metrics carefully as they could indicate profit taking amidst the recent rally.
