Japan's Nikkei 225 jumped 3.34% Wednesday, hitting 66,090 points in what feels like a real shift after weeks of grinding sideways. Chip stocks powered the move across the entire region, with Seoul's semiconductor names following suit as investors suddenly found fresh reasons to buy.

The mood turned after Wall Street closed at record levels overnight, but the real catalyst arrived from Washington. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he expects a U.S.-Iran deal "today or tomorrow" to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a corridor that handles roughly a third of global oil shipments. That simple signal sent crude prices lower and took pressure off energy-dependent economies like Japan and South Korea.

Chip Rally Breaks Through Recent Weakness

SoftBank surged more than 10%, while Tokyo Electron added 3.64% and Advantest climbed 7%. Kioxia rose 6.34%. The gains erased pressure from recent Bank of Japan currency intervention that had been weighing on exporters. In Seoul, SK Hynix jumped around 6% and Samsung Electronics pushed higher by more than 4% at the open.

The driver here goes beyond just cheaper oil. SK Hynix announced a partnership with SanDisk to launch High Bandwidth Flash, a new memory standard built for AI servers. Investors read it as confirmation that the AI memory supply chain still has legs. Andrew Jackson at Ortus Advisors tied the rally directly to renewed U.S. semiconductor strength, saying it reinforces a bullish picture for Asian AI stocks.

What Happens When the Deal Closes

Wall Street's overnight performance set a high bar. The S&P 500 and Dow both closed at record highs, with the Nasdaq leading at 2.59% gain. Wednesday's jump in Tokyo and Seoul breaks a volatile stretch that had tested both markets recently, and Morgan Stanley's Korea upgrade suggests chip names still have room to run if sentiment holds.

The real test comes once Washington and Tehran actually confirm the Hormuz agreement. If talks stall or collapse, this rally could reverse quickly. For now, traders are treating cheaper oil and AI chip momentum as a clean story.
