OpenAI's internal model Astra just solved 10 open problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science that had resisted human effort for decades. Each result came verified by external mathematicians, including Fields Medalist Tim Gowers. This is the same system that disproved the Erdős planar unit distance conjecture, a problem stuck unsolved since 1946.
What Astra actually accomplished
Back in May, the model autonomously generated a proof disproving Erdős's 80-year-old conjecture about how many pairs of points in a plane can sit exactly one unit apart. The model constructed configurations yielding at least n^(1+δ) unit-distance pairs, where δ exceeds zero. It narrowed that down to δ equals 0.014. No specialized mathematical training. No human intervention. The system reasoned through advanced algebra entirely on its own.
The August batch stacked 10 fresh results across geometry and theoretical computer science. Gowers called it "a milestone in AI mathematics." Companion papers from mathematicians including Gowers and Thomas Bloom verified each proof and extended the analysis further.
Why cryptography should pay attention
Every blockchain protocol, every token, every digital asset security assumption rests on the computational difficulty of certain mathematical problems. Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the entire crypto ecosystem depend on encryption foundations that haven't been fundamentally broken. A model that disproves 80-year-old conjectures in discrete geometry today signals what its successors might accomplish tomorrow. When AI systems start probing the mathematical bedrock of cryptographic security, the ground shifts.
The model didn't crack encryption yet. It solved pure mathematics problems. But the trajectory matters. Each generation of reasoning systems gets better at autonomous mathematical proof generation. The gap between "solving open conjectures" and "finding weaknesses in cryptographic assumptions" is measured in capability jumps, not centuries.
