The shift marks a potential turning point for how institutional actors manage approval workflows on the ledger.
The XRP Ledger is eyeing a major upgrade that could reshape multi-signature transaction handling. A proposal called "On-Chain Cosigner," submitted to the XRPL Standards repository by Shawn Xie, Zhiyuan Wang, Chenna Keshava B S, and Mayukha Vadari, would let signers coordinate and collect approvals directly on-chain. Today that process is fragmented. A transaction gets created, manually distributed to each authorized signer, then signatures trickle in through email or other external channels. If the coordinator loses the collected signatures or vanishes, the whole signing process collapses. That vulnerability, which the authors call the "last mile" problem, has been a stubborn limitation of institutional crypto custody workflows.
Under the new system, a participant creates a TransactionProposal object directly on the XRP Ledger, stored permanently on-chain with an immutable transaction payload. Each signature gets validated immediately upon submission and added to the growing list of approvals. Once the proposal reaches consensus, anyone could copy the completed transaction and submit it for execution. The change eliminates the need for external coordinators or centralized gatekeepers, turning what has been a manual back-and-forth into a native ledger function. This matters for banks and funds considering tokenized asset deployment on XRPL, since custody arrangements demand airtight approval trails and zero tolerance for process failures.
The proposal still needs to navigate the XRPL amendment process, which requires network consensus. But if adopted, it would address one of the biggest friction points that has kept institutions from treating the ledger as a serious settlement layer. Ripple has already pushed tokenized assets into live markets, and infrastructure upgrades like this one could accelerate institutional adoption considerably.
