Bitmine Immersion Technologies made a sharp pivot last week, spending nearly $86 million to repurchase 5.5 million shares of its own stock. This move came at the expense of its usual solid Ethereum accumulation, with the company buying only 7,430 ETH about $14 million worth during the same period. The decision signals a strategic shift in capital allocation that could reshape how investors view Bitmine's growth prospects.
The buyback program, authorized up to $4 billion, was expanded from $1 billion earlier this year. Chairman Tom Lee explained that Bitmine sees greater value in buying back shares when the market price falls below its intrinsic worth. At an average purchase price of $15.6156 per share, the company appears confident its own stock is undervalued.
Reducing Ethereum purchases to fund share buybacks suggests Bitmine is balancing between direct crypto exposure and shareholder returns. Since launching its Ethereum treasury strategy in mid-2025, Bitmine had steadily boosted its ETH holdings by tens of thousands weekly. Now, the smaller acquisition volume reflects management’s assessment that buying back shares offers a better immediate return than adding to its crypto treasury.
Bitmine holds 5,777,468 ETH, nearly 4.8% of the total Ethereum supply, alongside 207 Bitcoin and sizable stakes in companies like Beast Industries and Eightco Holdings. With $385 million in cash and marketable securities, Bitmine’s total portfolio was valued at $11.5 billion as of July 19. The company has staked approximately 85% of its Ethereum position, generating an estimated $247 million in annualized revenue from staking yields near 2.67%. This recurring income stream could fund future ETH purchases or additional buybacks.
Market reaction was positive, with Bitmine’s stock rising about 2.7% to $16.12 in Monday’s trading, outperforming the average repurchase price. This suggests investor confidence in the buyback’s accretive impact on shareholder value. However, the shift raises questions about Bitmine’s long-term crypto accumulation strategy, especially given the volatile nature of Ethereum’s price.
Investors should watch whether Bitmine maintains this cautious approach or resumes aggressive Ethereum purchases. The company’s balancing act between staking revenues, crypto exposure, and buybacks highlights evolving capital management tactics in crypto firms. For those tracking crypto treasury strategies, Bitmine’s behavior offers insights into how companies might navigate market valuation discrepancies.
