Bitmine, the largest Ethereum treasury firm, sharply reduced its ether acquisitions last week, adding just 7,430 ETH worth approximately $14 million. This marked one of its smallest weekly purchases since the launch of its Ethereum treasury strategy in June 2025. Simultaneously, the company repurchased about 5.5 million of its own shares at an average price of $15.62, reallocating capital from token accumulation to a $4 billion authorized buyback program.
Strategic Capital Allocation and Market Positioning
Bitmine now holds around 5.78 million ETH, representing close to 4.8% of Ethereum’s circulating supply, edging toward its stated goal of controlling 5% of the token. This sizeable stake situates Bitmine as a significant market participant with potential influence on ETH liquidity and price dynamics. However, the recent slowdown in ETH purchases signals a tactical pivot: leveraging stock buybacks to potentially enhance shareholder value rather than expanding its crypto treasury aggressively.
The company’s chairman, Thomas "Tom" Lee, highlighted that the reduced pace in ETH accumulation directly results from the share repurchase activity. This move indicates a shift in prioritization between expanding crypto assets and optimizing capital structure via equity transactions. Bitmine’s total holdings, valued at $11.5 billion, also include 207 bitcoin, $385 million in cash and marketable securities, and strategic stakes in firms like Beast Industries and Eightco Holdings.
also Bitmine’s staking operations remain solid, with 4.92 million ETH (about 85% of its holdings) staked through its MAVAN platform, generating projected annualized revenue of roughly $247 million. This staking income provides steady cash flow, cushioning any short-term impact from reduced ETH purchases and facilitating the stock buyback program.
For Ethereum investors, this development suggests a more nuanced engagement from major holders like Bitmine. While the firm’s gradual approach to reaching a 5% ETH supply stake remains, its willingness to divert capital toward stock repurchases may moderate ETH demand pressure in the near term. Market participants should watch whether this signals a broader strategic trend among crypto treasury managers balancing asset accumulation with traditional financial market tools.
