Tokenized equities went from $814 million in January to nearly $2 billion by mid-year. That's a 140% jump in one of crypto's fastest-moving segments. The shift matters because these aren't speculative tokens anymore. Real money is chasing fractional access to Apple, Tesla, and other US-listed companies through blockchain settlement.

What changed isn't just hype. Platforms like Bitget started connecting crypto exchanges directly to conventional market liquidity, which means tokenized stocks now trade on actual bid-ask spreads instead of isolated pools. That's the difference between a casino and a market.

DeFiLlama ran the numbers and found Bitget recorded a median spread of just 0.83 basis points across leading platforms. For context, a 0.83 bp spread means almost no friction when you're moving in and out of positions. Bigger volumes no longer mean wider spreads, which was the core problem that kept tokenized equities in the experimental zone.

Execution matters more than novelty now

The market's early growth came from the novelty angle. You can own fractional Apple shares on a blockchain. You get 24/7 trading instead of 9:30 to 4 PM New York time. No geographical barriers if you're in a country with limited broker access. All true. But novelty doesn't scale.

As tokenized equity volumes climbed, the problems became obvious fast. Reserve verification broke down on some platforms. Dividend payments lagged or got calculated wrong. Corporate actions like stock splits created settlement nightmares. Users discovered their fractional tokens didn't actually reflect the underlying equity behavior.

DeFiLlama's study looked at exactly these mechanics. Brokerage connections, dividend handling, settlement models, price accuracy. The platforms that survived the scrutiny weren't the ones with the cleverest tokenomics. They were the ones with boring infrastructure that actually worked. Bitget ranked strongly because it solved the unglamorous problem of order-book liquidity and clean execution.

The $2 billion market cap is still tiny compared with conventional equity markets, but it's no longer theoretical demand. Real institutional money is testing these products. That means the next phase is ruthless. Platforms that can't maintain tight spreads and accurate settlement will lose volume to ones that can. It's the opposite of the wild token launch era where novelty alone could drive adoption.
