SpaceXAI is scouting locations across Texas for a data center that could rival its Memphis flagship in raw computing power. The AI infrastructure subsidiary of SpaceX is weighing both greenfield builds and retrofits of existing structures, keeping its options open on speed versus cost.
The Memphis benchmark is worth spelling out. The Colossus facility near the city runs at roughly 1 gigawatt and houses hundreds of thousands of Nvidia GPUs. It was completed in 122 days, a pace that made it an industry talking point. The Texas project would aim to match or exceed that capacity.
Why Texas, and why now
Texas has a deregulated electricity market, enormous tracts of open land, and SpaceX already operates there, from Boca Chica's launch site to other facilities scattered across the state. That existing footprint gives SpaceXAI a logistical head start that a company starting from scratch simply wouldn't have. More than 40 people have already been added to the Texas team, and job postings in data center construction and development have gone live in parallel.
None of this involves crypto directly. No token, no mining rig, no Web3 angle. But the electricity implications are real for anyone watching the Texas grid. ERCOT, the state's grid operator, already manages demand from a substantial Bitcoin mining sector that has historically participated in demand response programs during peak periods. A new 1 GW load from SpaceXAI changes that supply-demand equation in ways miners and grid operators will need to account for.
On the decentralized side, projects like Render, Akash, and io.net are positioning themselves as alternatives to centralized AI cloud providers. Every large facility announcement from a company like SpaceXAI sharpens the competitive framing those projects use when pitching to developers who want to stay off centralized infrastructure. The Texas expansion, if it moves at Memphis speed, could be operational before most people expect.
