Michael Coates, Chief Information Security Officer at the Solana Foundation, has raised alarms about a rising wave of AI-driven crypto scams. These attacks don’t exploit bugs or loopholes in Solana’s blockchain but rely on highly convincing social engineering tactics, including voice deepfakes and phishing campaigns. According to Coates, scammers are now able to mimic voices and craft personalized messages so convincingly that even experienced users fall prey.
Coates, who previously held security leadership roles at Twitter and Mozilla, explained to CoinDesk that these scams focus on manipulating people rather than breaking cryptographic protections. For example, fraudsters impersonate trusted figures or colleagues via phone or message, tricking victims into handing over credentials or authorizing crypto transfers. Because blockchain transactions are irreversible, victims suffer immediate losses with no recourse for refunds or chargebacks.
The Solana CISO emphasized that this threat extends across the entire crypto ecosystem, urging projects to build security into their operations and team practices rather than relying solely on user caution. The rise of AI-generated scams adds a new layer of complexity to securing digital assets, highlighting a shift in the nature of crypto risks. Earlier this year, Coates joined the Solana Foundation to oversee security protocols and collaborate with regulators on improving cybersecurity standards for blockchain projects.
Market response was muted, with Solana’s token price showing little immediate change following the warnings.
