Alibaba has just launched its most powerful AI model yet, the Qwen3.8-Max, packing a staggering 2.4 trillion parameters. This release came barely two days after Moonshot AI, a company in which Alibaba holds a 36% stake, unveiled its 2.8 trillion-parameter model, Kimi K3. The rivalry between these two giants highlights a fierce competition in the trillion-parameter AI arena.
Qwen3.8-Max is immediately accessible through Alibaba Cloud’s Token Plan and Qoder platforms. During its preview phase, the company is offering it at a 90% discount, aiming to encourage broad adoption. The model is already ranked just behind Anthropic’s Fable 5, positioning Alibaba among the top AI innovators globally.
Moonshot AI, which Alibaba invested roughly $800 million in back in early 2024, has rapidly grown to a $2.5 billion valuation. Its Kimi K3 model surpasses Qwen3.8-Max in raw parameter count and is set for a full open-weight release on July 27, a critical move in their strategy to push open-access AI.
Implications for Crypto and AI Ecosystems
Both Alibaba and Moonshot are betting on open-weight releases that is, making the full AI model weights freely available rather than lock them behind licenses. This approach aligns closely with the decentralized AI vision driving crypto projects that seek to build permissionless AI infrastructures on blockchain. The open-access strategy could accelerate innovation and ecosystem growth, particularly for AI-token sectors.
Alibaba's shares responded positively to the announcement, rising over 3% in pre-market trading. The dual role of Alibaba, as both competitor and investor in Moonshot, adds a complex strategic layer. Financially, Alibaba benefits no matter which model gains more traction, but the race between Qwen3.8-Max and Kimi K3 is set to influence the broader AI industry significantly.
