Silicon Motion shares jumped 6.75% Tuesday before giving back ground Wednesday morning, sliding 2.42% to $262.00 in pre-market trading. The chipmaker rolled out a next-gen SSD controller designed specifically for AI infrastructure, a bet that the infrastructure demand feeding machine learning workloads won't slow down anytime soon.

The company's new SM8466 controller uses PCIe Gen6 and pumps out 28 gigabytes per second of throughput. That's the kind of speed needed when you're moving massive datasets through data centers running real-time inference. The chip also handles seven million random input-output operations per second and supports enterprise SSDs with capacities exceeding 512 terabytes. Silicon Motion built this specifically for AI factories and large inference systems that need both raw speed and enormous storage density.

Broader storage push across industries

The SM8466 isn't the only new gear coming. Silicon Motion will showcase five product lines at FMS 2026 in Santa Clara next month, targeting everything from data centers to vehicles. The company's also pushing the SM8366 MonTitan platform for cache offload in enterprise AI setups. These come in multiple form factors U.2, E3.S, E3.L with both TLC and QLC NAND, scaling from 32 terabytes up to 256 terabytes depending on density.

For the enterprise boot storage market, Silicon Motion is highlighting NVMe controllers like the SM8008, which hits 14 gigabytes per second over PCIe Gen5 while consuming less than five watts. The company's clearly hedging across multiple industries: servers, networking gear, robotics, vehicles, edge devices. As AI workloads multiply and data centers face infrastructure pressure, storage that can handle real-time inference, cache operations, and massive datasets becomes table stakes.
