Michael Saylor drew a sharp line in the sand on Monday. His company just sold 1,638 Bitcoin to cover obligations, but he wanted everyone to know something else: not a single satoshi of his own coins left the vault. "When I say Never Sell Your Bitcoin, I speak as one saver to another. I have never sold mine. Not one satoshi," he wrote, making clear the distinction between his personal conviction and MicroStrategy's need to manage cash flow as a public company.
The sale itself tells a different story about corporate Bitcoin ownership. MicroStrategy moved the coins at an average of $63,957 each, which meant taking a loss of roughly $11,500 per coin since their cost basis sat at $75,419. The company needed the cash for two specific reasons: to boost its USD reserves by $250 million, bringing them to $4.0 billion, and to retire $81 million of STRC shares, a Bitcoin-backed preferred stock that pays out 12% annually.
That dividend obligation is growing fast. In the second quarter alone, preferred dividends hit $400.7 million, jumping dramatically from just $49.1 million a year earlier. The pile keeps getting bigger, which explains why Saylor's company has shifted from pure accumulation to occasional sales. The treasury now sits at 842,138 Bitcoin as of August 2, down from 843,738 in late May.
The timing matters. Saylor spent years building a cult-like following among retail Bitcoin holders by hammering the "never sell" message. Two days before his Monday statement, he pushed back against rumors spreading online that the company was abandoning its Bitcoin strategy. He clarified then that MicroStrategy never formally committed to a never-sell policy, only that it intended to hold Bitcoin as a long-term store of value. The company's disclosed approach, which dates back to 2020, always included room to buy or sell depending on capital needs.
What happens next will show whether this was a one-off pause or the start of a shift. The next filing arrives within a week, and it will reveal whether the company's 10-week stretch without net Bitcoin purchases continues or if fresh accumulation resumes.
