Retired US Army General James "Spider" Marks is calling out Washington's dependence on closed, proprietary AI systems, arguing that handing national security infrastructure over to a handful of Silicon Valley vendors creates exactly the kind of fragile single points of failure that intelligence doctrine has always warned against.

Marks, whose career spans Operation Iraqi Freedom and some of the most sensitive intelligence roles in recent US military history, frames the issue as a trust deficit. The Pentagon relies on commercial AI from companies that operate as black boxes, where the government cannot inspect the model's internals, cannot customize it for specific mission requirements, and cannot guarantee the API stays online when it matters most. That arrangement, he says, is structurally dangerous.

Kimi K3 reshapes the comparison

The trigger for his renewed urgency is concrete. On July 17, Beijing-based startup Moonshot AI unveiled Kimi K3, a model with 2.8 trillion parameters and a 1 million-token context window. Those numbers alone are striking, but the architecture is what changes the strategic picture. K3 is the first open-source model operating near the 3-trillion-parameter scale, and independent benchmarks suggest its front-end coding performance rivals Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's ChatGPT variants.

Moonshot AI announced full weight release by July 27. That means any government, research institution, or developer can download, inspect, and deploy the model without asking a corporate gatekeeper for permission. No API dependency. No vendor lock-in. No blackout risk during a crisis.

Marks' argument is not that Kimi K3 is superior to American models in every dimension. His point is architectural. Open-weight models let defense users audit what is running on their infrastructure, adapt it to classified applications, and retain operational control in ways that a subscription to a proprietary API simply cannot provide. China is releasing that capability to the world. The US, by contrast, is deepening its reliance on closed commercial systems at exactly the moment that open alternatives are proving competitive.

Where crypto and decentralized compute fit in

There is no direct link between Kimi K3 and any blockchain project or token as of now. No on-chain inference marketplace, no DAO governance layer, no crypto integration of any kind. The sectors remain separate.

That said, if defense establishments globally start shifting toward open-weight AI, the downstream demand for decentralized compute networks could grow in ways that are difficult to price today. Decentralized GPU networks and permissionless inference platforms are structurally aligned with the open-weight philosophy Marks is advocating, even if no formal connection yet exists.

Crypto markets ticked slightly higher on AI-adjacent tokens following the Kimi K3 announcement, though volume remained thin.
