Bier had announced his exit from X just hours before, ending roughly a year in the role where he'd spent aggressively recruiting engineers from Meta with chunky pay packages. A lateral move to OpenAI sounded plausible to anyone who caught Ambrosino's initial post but scrolled past the follow-up. Ambrosino carries real weight too, he actually runs Codex, and the platform has exploded from nowhere to over 5 million weekly users since February, a sixfold jump. That kind of growth means his voice travels fast across the industry.
The joke landed with extra punch because of the cold war between Musk and OpenAI. A jury tossed Musk's lawsuit against the company and Sam Altman back in May, ruling he'd filed too late. He's kept firing criticism anyway, including recent jabs at Apple's OpenAI trade secrets lawsuit. Meanwhile, Musk has been pushing Grok models as direct competition all year. So when Ambrosino joked about hiring a Musk lieutenant, it felt like a genuine shot across the bow. Elon himself had already thanked Bier for his work earlier that same day, calling him someone who helped make X much better. The timing created perfect conditions for chaos, and Ambrosino's joke delivered exactly that. Bier's exit also came with three successors splitting his duties across design, product, and mobile engineering, which added to the sense that real shifts were happening at X regardless of the OpenAI rumors.
