MicroStrategy took a swing at the markets last week, selling off 1,637 Bitcoin for roughly $105 million and parking $4 billion in cash reserves. The move sent MSTR stock down 4.34% to $93.32, a signal that investors weren't thrilled with the pivot away from pure Bitcoin accumulation.
The company offloaded Bitcoin at an average price around $104.73 million, trimming its total holdings to 842,138 BTC. That's still massive, but the sale marks a real shift in how MicroStrategy thinks about capital allocation. The company paid an average of $75,419 per coin to build that position, so they're still sitting on serious gains even after last week's move.
What made this feel different was the cash raise that came alongside it. MicroStrategy sold 3.01 million shares of common stock and pulled in $290.6 million, then boosted its USD reserves by another $250 million. That $4 billion cash cushion now exists to cover preferred stock dividends, interest payments, and whatever else management decides it needs flexibility for. The real message here is clear: they're not betting the company on Bitcoin anymore.
The preferred stock play
Buried in the numbers was another move that showed where their head is at. MicroStrategy bought back 912,143 shares of STRC, its high-yielding preferred stock, for $81.2 million. That particular security pays a 12% annual dividend, and the company signaled it plans to keep that rate steady as long as STRC trades below its $100 par value. Once it hits par reliably, they'll consider cutting the dividend. It's the kind of move that screams capital management, not moonshot thinking.
The quarter that led to all this was brutal. MicroStrategy reported an $8.22 billion net loss, driven by an $8.32 billion unrealized loss on digital assets. That's the kind of number that makes even Bitcoin bulls nervous. The sale of 1,637 BTC wasn't panic, but it was definitely a step back from the "accumulate forever" narrative that dominated their messaging before.
MSTR shares dropped through $95.41 during the session before finding support near $92.95 into the close. Traders are now watching whether the stock can hold that ground or if more weakness is coming. The company's position in Bitcoin remains enormous compared to nearly any other corporate player, but the willingness to diversify into cash and preferred securities suggests management is thinking about downside scenarios in a way they weren't before.
