LDO fell 16.31% in 24 hours as Ethereum's proposed EIP-8361 threatened to halve staking rewards from 2.6% down to 1.2%. The shift would gut the appeal of liquid staking tokens like stETH, sending traders scrambling to reassess Lido's growth prospects. Trading volume exploded over 230%, a sign the market was repricing risk fast.

The proposal itself hasn't landed yet, but investors priced in the damage anyway. Staking economics matter enormously for Lido's total value locked and revenue streams, so even a proposal this early triggered aggressive selling pressure. Uncertainty over Ethereum's reward structure now dominates the mood.

Exchange deposits tick up despite the rout

On-chain data showed $214.13K of LDO flowing onto exchanges, a pattern that usually precedes more selling. More tokens available on trading floors means holders preparing to dump. Unlike recent weeks when withdrawals dominated, this inflow signals caution during the volatility spike.

The deposit volume stayed modest relative to the trading surge though. That gap suggests exchange activity alone can't explain the full extent of the decline.

Traders doubling down with use

Derivatives activity bucked the bearish move. Open Interest jumped 14.26% to $67.18 million as traders kept opening fresh leveraged positions instead of cutting exposure. Rising OI during a falling price typically means both bulls and bears are increasing bets, betting volatility will stay elevated. For LDO, it signals traders expect the uncertainty to persist rather than resolve quickly.

The broader staking rebalance could reshape how liquid staking products compete, and Lido will feel it hardest. The token's recovery hinges on whether Ethereum actually pushes through the proposal or markets shrug it off as exaggerated risk.
