Japanese financial institutions hesitate to commit to XRP investments, stuck in a cycle where each waits for peers to move first. This cautious environment slows XRP’s growth despite strong interest in blockchain-based finance.

Institutional Hesitation in Japan’s Financial Culture

At WebX Asia 2026 in Tokyo, Evernorth COO Meg Nakamura described the situation as a classic chicken-and-egg problem. Banks and financial firms see the potential of blockchain solutions like XRP but are reluctant to lead without clear signs of widespread adoption. This hesitation aligns with Japan’s regulatory and risk-averse culture, which favors steady pilot programs and limited deployments over rapid, large-scale investments.

Tokenization as the Next Frontier for XRP

Nakamura highlighted a shift in focus from stablecoins toward tokenization. Unlike stablecoins that facilitate payments and settlements, tokenization represents a broader blockchain application turning government bonds, equities, real estate, and other assets into digital tokens. This could reduce costs, unlock liquidity, and open investment opportunities previously out of reach for many. As tokenization gains traction, platforms like the XRP Ledger could become fundamental infrastructure for institutional finance.
