During the second quarter of 2026, stablecoin cross-border payments have been noticeably more cost-effective than traditional interbank foreign exchange rates. This trend highlights the growing importance of routing choices in reducing transaction costs, a shift that many businesses may not yet fully understand.

According to the latest report from Borderless.xyz, every month in Q2 showed stablecoin payments priced below interbank rates. For businesses, this translates to significant savings. Using a less efficient routing provider added an average of $2,330 in costs for every $1 million transferred. Such fees are substantial, particularly for companies involved in high-volume cross-border transactions.

Volatility and Cost Disparities Across Regions

The report also revealed stark regional differences. For instance, African corridors experienced the most volatility, while Latin America saw a consistent narrowing of spreads over the quarter. This disparity indicates that businesses operating in these regions could benefit from strategic routing choices to optimize their costs.

Borderless tracked 260 payment corridors in 108 countries and 59 currencies, asserting that the median cost to deliver a $10,000 payment hovered around $27 throughout Q2, showcasing stability in costs. However, the median Parity Gap, which measures the deviation of stablecoin delivery prices from interbank pricing, deepened to minus 5.9 basis points by June. This suggests that stablecoin deliveries are increasingly competitive.

The Importance of Provider Choice

Provider selection has emerged as a key factor influencing costs. Businesses that used the median provider were hit with an additional charge of 23.3 basis points, translating to $2,330 extra for every $1 million transferred. The report highlights what it terms the “Routing Tax,” which shows the critical need for businesses to compare providers effectively.

Interestingly, the cheapest provider fluctuated frequently. For example, in the USDT-to-Brazilian-real corridor, the lead provider changed hands 34 times in just 88 days. Such volatility demonstrates that businesses must remain agile in their routing strategies to capitalize on the best rates available.

Impact of Asset and Corridor Choices

When examining the performance of different stablecoins, the report found that while USDC and USDT maintained a close pricing relationship overall, discrepancies emerged in specific corridors. For instance, USDC traded at a persistent 99-basis-point discount to USDT in Peru. These variations can have significant implications for businesses operating in these markets.

Moreover, large payment flows can exacerbate routing costs, as illustrated by Mexico's 21.5-basis-point USDT routing gap impacting $67.6 billion in annual remittance inflows. Such inefficiencies can lead to substantial financial losses if not addressed promptly.
