In a recent enforcement surge, the U.S. Department of Justice filed civil forfeiture actions to seize over $25 million in cryptocurrency linked to international fraud schemes targeting North American victims.
The funds stem from five related investigations into fake crypto investment and romance scams affecting the United States and Canada. These operations highlight how diverse fraud networks continue exploiting digital assets to victimize thousands.
The DOJ's Scam Center Strike Force has now reclaimed assets exceeding $800 million, underscoring the scale and profitability of crypto-based scams.
Investigators from the U.S. Secret Service’s Washington Field Office traced complex laundering operations funneling stolen crypto through overseas channels. These activities reveal common patterns: stolen funds were routed via networks primarily located in Southeast Asia, with IP addresses connected to China, Malaysia, and Cambodia.
The largest probe began after Canadian authorities alerted U.S. counterparts to suspicious cross-border activity late in 2024. This case alone involves approximately $10.4 million linked to over 270 victim transactions, highlighting the transnational character of modern crypto fraud.
The biggest share of seized assets, around $12.1 million, emanates from a romance scam scheme where over 200 victims were deceived into transferring funds into bogus crypto investments. Romance scams continue to blend emotional manipulation with sophisticated financial fraud, making recovery efforts complex.
Three additional investigations focus on scams reported within the U.S. National Capital Region. These involve fee-based recovery frauds and additional schemes, with targeted forfeitures ranging from roughly $285,000 to $2.4 million.
This enforcement action demonstrates how despite increased regulatory attention, crypto fraud remains adaptive, leveraging global laundering networks to obscure illegal proceeds.
For investors, the cases reaffirm the necessity of rigorous due diligence and skepticism toward unsolicited crypto offers promising high returns or emotionally driven investment pitches.
