Jordan Henderson can begin team training at Chelsea during the semi-finals stage, but Xabi Alonso won't clear him for full action until medical staff sign off. The 36-year-old midfielder broke his left forearm celebrating England's World Cup win in July, and recovery is progressing slower than hoped.
Henderson fractured the bone in an oddly embarrassing moment. England had just beaten Mexico 3-2 in the last-16, and he went over advertising boards during the pitch invasion. Surgery followed, though he remained with the national squad throughout rehabilitation. At Brentford, where he's contracted until 2027, there's a gentleman's agreement letting him walk away free. Chelsea's interest appears serious, with Alonso keen to pair youth development with tested leadership. The former Bayer Leverkusen manager has made midfield experience a priority, and Henderson ticks that box despite his age.
Alonso is juggling other fitness headaches too. Romeo Lavia missed recent friendlies, and the squad turnover Chelsea inherited means the manager's rebuild is still taking shape. Other veteran targets like Danny Welbeck are also in the mix. Nothing's confirmed yet. Henderson's injury status remains fluid, and as of early August, no transfer deal has been announced. Alonso's optimism about the midfielder's fitness doesn't guarantee a move is close or even agreed behind closed doors.
