Google's Gemini crossed 950 million monthly active users in Q2 2026, up from 750 million in February, meaning the app added more than 200 million users in roughly five months. That puts it within 50 million of ChatGPT, which hit the 1 billion mark in June 2026. A year ago, the gap looked far more comfortable for OpenAI.
The numbers behind the surge
Gemini's monthly user base tripled year-over-year. On iOS alone, the app was downloaded over 137 million times in the past 12 months, according to Appfigures. Sensor Tower data puts Gemini's share of the AI assistant market at 27.7% for H1 2026, up sharply from where it stood at the start of the year. ChatGPT, meanwhile, slipped below 50% market share for the first time, even though its raw user count keeps climbing. Google's AI-powered search Q&A mode also crossed 1 billion users in the same quarter, which gives the company two separate products now operating at that scale simultaneously.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai credited features like Daily Brief and the personalized agent Gemini Spark, currently live in the US and rolling out internationally, for driving engagement. He also flagged that Google is already committing serious compute toward Gemini 4, calling it "a very ambitious effort," and said the company intends to ship new models nearly every month. The EU's recent $1 billion fine against Google under the Digital Markets Act adds a regulatory layer to this expansion push, particularly as Gemini becomes more deeply embedded across Google's product ecosystem.
What analysts and competitors are watching
The market share shift is drawing more attention than the raw user figures. Losing majority share is a psychological and commercial threshold for OpenAI: it means more than half of AI assistant sessions now happen outside ChatGPT. Gemini's 27.7% slice is still well behind, but the trajectory is what investors are pricing in. At Q2's growth pace, the user gap between the two products could close within a single quarter.
Pichai's comment about "incredible pace" of feature shipping is a signal that Google sees this window as the critical one. Gemini is already bundled across Android, Chrome, and Google Search, giving it distribution that no standalone AI app can easily replicate. The billion-user club Google keeps referencing, Search, Gmail, YouTube, Android, Chrome, Drive, is now potentially about to add a seventh member.
