Cybercriminals gained unauthorized access to Werth Wealth Management’s computer systems, potentially compromising highly sensitive data from thousands of clients. The Kansas-based advisory firm revealed that hackers may have stolen names, Social Security numbers, driver’s licenses, passports, birth dates, and account identifiers associated with Raymond James accounts.
Incident Detection and Immediate Response
The breach was uncovered by Raymond James’ cybersecurity team, who quickly identified suspicious activity within Werth’s networks. The firms acted fast to isolate and secure the affected systems, preventing further unauthorized intrusion. Importantly, customer funds and accounts held through Raymond James remained secure and untouched during the incident.
Protective Measures and Client Support
Werth Wealth Management took several steps to mitigate risks for impacted clients, including placing identity theft alerts on Raymond James accounts and notifying law enforcement. They also engaged cybersecurity experts to cut off access and enhance overall system security. Affected clients received notification letters offering two years of complimentary credit monitoring through Experian IdentityWorks, aiming to detect any fraudulent activity early.
The firm has reported the incident to regulators such as the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation. This event joins a growing trend of financial institutions grappling with data breaches in an increasingly hostile cyber environment.
