Coinbase rolled out US stock trading to UK users this week, letting them access nearly 4,000 equities commission-free from the same app where they hold crypto. The kicker: trading runs 24 hours a day, five days a week, way beyond NYSE and Nasdaq hours. Minimum entry is £1, fractional shares included, funded in either GBP or USDC.

Closing the traditional-crypto divide

The move slots into Coinbase's bigger picture, one the company calls an "Everything Exchange." Think crypto, stocks, derivatives, savings, borrowing all under one roof. CEO Brian Armstrong has been pushing this vision for years, and the UK rollout marks real progress toward that goal. What changed? July 2026 brought FCA authorization that finally let Coinbase offer investment services beyond crypto. That same approval unlocked derivatives trading for institutional players, crypto futures included.

A year of product stacking

Stock trading isn't the only thing Coinbase added to the UK lineup lately. November 2025 saw a GBP savings account partnership with Clearbank, initially offering 3.75% AER with FSCS protection, positioning itself as a direct Revolut competitor. Then came April 2026, when Coinbase launched a crypto-backed borrowing product built on the DeFi protocol Morpho. UK users can now borrow USDC against Bitcoin and Ethereum holdings through an on-chain smart contract instead of relying on Coinbase's balance sheet. That matters because it keeps assets off traditional books.

Coinbase isn't alone in blending these worlds. eToro already offers stocks, ETFs, and commodities alongside crypto for UK retail investors. But the 24-hour trading window and tight integration with stablecoin balances represent a different approach, one that treats the entire portfolio as a single liquid asset class rather than separate silos.
