The appointment comes as the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) attempts to stabilize leadership following a series of failures and frequent changes at the top.
Ranieri, 74, steps into a role focused on long-term rebuilding rather than immediate match tactics. His job will be to oversee talent development and structural reforms within Italian football, aiming to restore the country’s once dominant presence on the global stage. Italy’s recent failure to qualify for major tournaments exposed deeper systemic issues, prompting FIGC President Giovanni Malagò to initiate broad restructuring.
Leadership Turmoil and Ranieri’s Return
Before Ranieri’s appointment, the technical director spot saw rapid turnover. Paolo Maldini briefly held the role in July 2026 but resigned after just over two weeks due to disagreements over coaching appointments. Ranieri had been linked to the position since mid-2025, even declining a chance to coach the national team to remain with AS Roma. Following his departure from Roma in April 2026, he reemerged as a leading candidate for the FIGC role.
With a career spanning top clubs like Juventus, Inter, and Chelsea, plus a historic Premier League title with Leicester, Ranieri brings extensive experience across diverse football cultures.
