A team at China's Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics just published results showing their laser-produced plasma EUV light source hit 3.42% conversion efficiency. That's the kind of number that matters if you're trying to make advanced chips without buying from ASML, the Dutch company that has basically owned this bottleneck for two decades. The catch: they're still running at 100-150 watts of power output. ASML's commercial gear sits way higher. But direction beats perfection when you're locked out of buying the real thing.

The team was led by Lin Nan, who actually used to work at ASML before heading back to China. That's not coincidence. The EUV light source is the single most expensive and hardest piece of semiconductor manufacturing equipment on the planet. You need it to etch patterns smaller than 7 nanometers. Without it, you can't make the latest chips. The US has kept ASML from selling its best tools to China since 2019, turning EUV access into a proxy war over AI compute and national security. A Chinese breakthrough here, even a partial one, resets the entire calculus.

The software counteroffensive

While Shanghai's optics lab was chasing the hardware problem, Alibaba moved on the software front this week. They previewed a new language model called Qwen3.8-Max-Preview with 2.4 trillion parameters. At the same time, their chip division T-Head said it would open-source something called SAIL. That's their answer to Nvidia's CUDA, the software layer that lets chips actually run AI workloads. You can have the silicon, but without the software framework, it's expensive decoration.

The logic is straightforward: if China can't buy ASML equipment fast enough, they squeeze out the dependency by building their own silicon stack from optics to software. The EUV paper shows it's technically possible. The Alibaba move shows they're thinking about making that silicon useful when it arrives.
