In the first half of 2026, wrench attacks against crypto holders did not just climb in number. They changed in character, and the shift is documented in CertiK's newly released Intel3D: H1 2026 Wrench Attacks Report.
CertiK verified 52 such attacks worldwide between January and June, up 33.3% from 39 in the same period a year earlier.
The financial damage is harder to look past. Recorded exposure, covering ransom demands, transferred funds, and frozen assets, reached roughly $124.1 million. That is an 11.8-fold jump from $10.5 million in H1 2025.
But the headline figure is not the count. It is the method.
Home invasions rose from a single verified case in H1 2025 to 20 in H1 2026, now making up about 41% of all confirmed incidents. Kidnapping also increased, from 12 to 16 cases, but the home invasion surge is what defines the period.
CertiK's explanation is direct: as multisig setups, hardware wallets, and cold storage have made remote exploits harder to pull off, attackers have pivoted to the person holding the keys. A home invasion hits the victim's residence, family, devices, and psychological state all at once, in a way no remote hack can replicate.
Geography tells its own story. Europe accounted for 39 of the 52 global incidents, or 75% of the total. France alone recorded 33 cases, which is 63.5% of the worldwide figure. The US logged 4 incidents; Sweden and the UK recorded 2 each.
A significant portion of the report focuses on how attackers find their targets. CertiK describes a growing "data supply chain" built from leaked databases, tax records, exchange data, and social media activity. Victims are not chosen at random. They are researched, often before anyone realizes personal information has been exposed.
That detail reframes the threat entirely. The breach that enables a home invasion may have happened months earlier, on an exchange, in a government database, or in a forum post a holder made years ago.
