Bitcoin climbed past $64,000 during Asian trading hours, showing resilience despite mounting uncertainty around the Federal Reserve's upcoming rate decision. The market remains calm, even as investors brace for potential volatility.
The Bitcoin Volatility Index (BVIV), which tracks annualized 30-day implied volatility, stays below 40%. This is a sharp contrast to spikes above 60% seen in early February and June when the market faced sharp sell-offs. Such low volatility readings point to subdued demand for options that protect against big price swings.
Traders seem unconcerned about sudden moves right now, despite the tension around Wednesday’s Federal Open Market Committee meeting. Most expect the Fed to hold interest rates steady, but some, including hedge fund giant Citadel, are betting on a hike. This split is reflected in the CME FedWatch tool, which shows a roughly 35% chance of a rate increase an unusually high level of uncertainty so close to the decision.
Normally, by this point, markets price in a single clear outcome whether a rate hike, cut, or pause. The current indecision signals traders are preparing for surprises. Bitcoin’s calm contrasts with this uncertainty, suggesting investors either expect limited impact or have already adjusted their positions.
