Zcash is set to activate the Ironwood network upgrade at block height 3,428,143, expected around noon UTC on July 28. This update aims to improve the security and transparency of Zcash’s circulating supply, addressing a serious vulnerability discovered earlier this year.
The Ironwood upgrade introduces a new shielded pool with quantum-resistant notes and a mechanism called a turnstile. This turnstile restricts ZEC movement, ensuring that the amount exiting the shielded pool never exceeds what legitimately entered it.
Fixing a Hidden Flaw
Earlier this year, security researcher Taylor Hornby uncovered a counterfeiting flaw in Zcash’s Orchard shielded pool, which obscures transaction data. Because of this, users couldn’t independently verify whether counterfeit ZEC was created before the issue’s emergency fix. The Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL) responded swiftly with a network upgrade to patch the problem.
Ironwood fully addresses this by sealing off the original Orchard pool and creating a new shielded pool with corrected cryptography. After the upgrade, transactions within the old Orchard pool will be disabled, and funds must exit through the new turnstile mechanism, preventing any hidden inflation of supply.
With this upgrade, Zcash enhances user confidence by allowing independent verification of the ZEC supply's integrity. The Zcash community has been closely monitoring the countdown to Ironwood’s activation, as it marks a significant step toward greater network robustness.
This rollout follows wider trends in crypto security, as projects increasingly prioritize transparency and safeguarding against exploits. Earlier this year, platforms like Coinbase and others have also updated systems to fend off vulnerabilities, reflecting a market-wide focus on resilience.
