The World Foundation raised $52.5 million by selling locked WLD tokens, aiming to push its World ID platform into broader use for businesses, consumers, and AI verification.
Strategic Token Sale Led by Pantera Capital
The recent funding round was led by Pantera Capital alongside Bain Capital Crypto and other investors. All WLD tokens sold come with a one-year lockup, preventing immediate circulation on the market. These tokens are designed strictly for utility within the World Network and don’t represent any equity or profit rights in Tools for Humanity, which develops the World hardware and software.
World ID’s Role Against AI-Driven Impersonation
With over 39 million users and 18 million completing Orb verification, World ID provides a privacy-focused way for users to prove their humanity without revealing personal information. The technology employs cryptography and anonymized computations to secure digital credentials stored locally on users’ devices. This system is gaining traction especially as AI-fueled deepfakes and synthetic identities challenge online services like digital advertising, dating apps, and voting platforms.
Pantera’s general partner Cosmo Jiang pointed out the rising enterprise demand for proof-of-human technology as the prevalence of AI-generated content grows. World ID 4.0 introduces enterprise-scale features, including zero-knowledge proofs, enabling developers to embed multiple credentials within the platform.
Already integrated with services such as Zoom, DocuSign, Okta, Vercel, and Tinder, World ID is transitioning from a community network to wider product adoption. This expansion could help tackle issues related to AI impersonation, echoing concerns from other sectors about technology's increasing role in identity verification.
