More than 53% of all tokens launched since 2021 have already failed, a staggering statistic shedding light on the struggles within the cryptocurrency market. Jordi Urbea, CEO of Ogilvy Spain, emphasizes that the primary reason for this high failure rate isn't weak technology but a lack of differentiation in branding and messaging.
During a recent discussion at the Ibiza Tech Forum 2026, Urbea pointed out that the crypto advertising landscape has become homogenized. He noted, “If you look at the crypto sector and all the advertising, the ads are exactly the same.” This observation is underpinned by the fact that between 150 and 300 new coins are launched every week, with approximately 10,700 remaining active. In this crowded field, Bitcoin and Ethereum dominate, commanding nearly 75% of the total market value, leaving a shrinking slice of attention for thousands of similar projects.
The inability to communicate a unique value proposition is a common pitfall. As Urbea states, “For many years I collaborated with many startups, and most of them disappeared because they couldn’t explain the difference between one brand and another.” This aligns with data from CB Insights, which reveals that about 42% of startup failures are due to a lack of market need essentially a failure to convey what sets them apart.
Imitation further exacerbates the problem, as new entrants often replicate successful branding strategies of their predecessors, leading to a cycle where individual messages blend into a uniform chorus. This phenomenon is well-articulated by marketing theorists like Byron Sharp, who argue that growth is driven more by distinctiveness than mere differences.
As the crypto market grapples with these issues, the pressing need for brands to carve out a unique identity has never been more apparent. Without this crucial differentiation, many projects risk fading into obscurity, becoming yet another casualty in a rapidly evolving landscape.
