Whale transactions on EigenLayer spiked sharply after June 21, 2026, the day the Eigen Foundation unlocked EIGEN token transferability. New wallet creation jumped alongside it, giving on-chain watchers their clearest view yet of where large holders are placing their chips.
The price hasn't moved in step. Despite double-digit percentage rebounds in EIGEN during the week heading into mid-July, the token's market action lags well behind the accumulation signal. Derivatives open interest climbed 27% over the same period, meaning leveraged traders are already staking out positions ahead of any catalyst.
A protocol in transition, not in trouble
EigenLayer once held over $15 billion in total value locked and commanded roughly 94% of Ethereum's restaking market. That TVL figure now sits near $4.72B, a steep slide that raises legitimate questions about user retention. But the dominance figure hasn't cracked, and the protocol has pivoted its story beyond restaking entirely: EigenCloud is the new pitch, positioning the network as infrastructure for verifiable computing rather than just a place to re-stake ETH.
As reported by on-chain analysts tracking the post-unlock activity, new wallet creation appears tied at least partly to the transfer unlock itself, and whether that rate sustains over the next few weeks will tell observers a great deal about genuine demand versus unlock-driven noise.
Andreessen Horowitz's crypto arm, a16z, added $70 million to its EIGEN position in June 2025, on top of a $100 million commitment from EigenLayer's Series B round. That $170 million total isn't a trade, it's a multi-year bet. Whether EigenCloud delivers enough to justify that conviction is the question the market hasn't answered yet. Rising open interest cuts both ways: a strong EigenCloud launch could fuel a sharp rally through leveraged positions, while a disappointment would send those same positions into liquidation quickly.
TVL stabilization in the coming weeks is the cleaner signal to watch.
