The Social Security Administration usually releases SSI payments on the first of the month, but if that day is a weekend or holiday, payments are advanced to the last business day before it. In 2026, August 1 falls on a Saturday, so beneficiaries will get their payments on July 31. This adjustment means Walmart, whose fiscal quarter ends July 31, could capture spending powered by these benefits earlier than usual.

Approximately 7.3 million Americans received SSI benefits in June, with an average monthly amount around $738. Total monthly SSI payments sum to about $5.4 billion, representing a significant portion of spending for lower-income households. While this shift doesn’t increase total consumer income, it changes when purchases are recorded, potentially lifting Walmart’s Q2 results.

How Walmart’s Peers Are Affected Differently

Retail competitors like Dollar General and Dollar Tree already include August SSI payments in their comparable fiscal quarters each year, so they face no similar timing advantage. This puts Walmart in a somewhat unique position: its quarterly revenue growth might partly reflect this payment schedule shift rather than purely an increase in demand.

Investors should carefully separate actual changes in consumer behavior from accounting effects caused by the earlier SSI payouts.
