Wall Street is preparing to funnel a staggering $7.5 trillion into building AI infrastructure over the next five years, marking one of the largest technological investments in history. This massive spending spree dwarfs the GDP of every country except the US and China, underlining how deeply AI has become embedded in tech giants' growth strategies.

McKinsey forecasts about $7 trillion will be poured into data centers by 2030, with $5.2 trillion targeted purely for AI workloads. But much of this funding isn’t coming from cash reserves. Roughly 75% of the capital is being raised through debt, pushing credit markets into risky territory. Credit spreads are widening as investor appetite for tech-related bonds wanes, and order books for these loans are thinning.

Leading the charge on these investments are Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, expected to shell out around $700 billion on AI infrastructure within 2026 alone. Collectively, the broader industry could break past $1 trillion in spending this year. Alphabet and its peers have already issued approximately $159 billion in bonds to back their AI data center investments for 2026, turning the bond market into a major financier of Big Tech's ambitions. However, the concern is whether this debt-fueled expansion is sustainable or nearing a breaking point.

Besides traditional financing, companies like CoreWeave, a specialist in GPU cloud computing, have secured large debt facilities CoreWeave’s $7.5 billion loan comes with an 11% interest rate, demanding significant revenue to just cover debt costs starting from 2026. Private credit and complex financial products are increasingly popular as regulatory hurdles complicate standard bank loans for such enormous sums.

Economic optimism exists because AI workloads are growing rapidly, and many enterprises are eager to integrate AI across operations. That said, the flip side shows many businesses are still experimenting with AI, unsure of when it will become fully monetizable. Efficiency gains in AI models further cloud the picture, as future hardware needs may be lower than current projections.

This tension presents risks to investors watching technology credit markets closely, as shocks could ripple into wider financial areas.
