“The skyrocketing volume isn’t as broad as it looks,” a market participant noted after tokenized equities volume jumped 288 percent in July. The surge centered overwhelmingly on a single product, the tokenized QQQ ETF known as QQQB, which dominated decentralized secondary markets. While headlines celebrated the booming numbers, the real story reveals a concentrated interest rather than widespread adoption across tokenized stocks.

QQQB is a one-to-one blockchain token backed by shares of the Invesco QQQ ETF that tracks the Nasdaq-100 index. Its appeal lies in offering 24/7 trading hours, unlike the traditional QQQ that only trades during regular market hours in the U.S. This after-hours accessibility drove demand on Robinhood Chain’s Arbitrum-based rollup, which fully subsidizes gas fees to remove trading friction. The platform launched tokenized equities as a core offering in Q2 2026, stirring enthusiasm among retail users eager to trade stocks on-chain without conventional barriers.

However, the gas fee subsidy is set to end around September, putting user appetite for these tokens to the test when trading costs kick in. At the same time, traditional and crypto exchanges are ramping up alternative products like stock perpetual futures that offer round-the-clock price exposure without dealing with actual underlying shares. This competition challenges the tokenization model’s staying power. The upcoming DTCC launch of tokenized securities infrastructure in October will likely influence whether Robinhood Chain’s approach gains institutional support or gets overshadowed by established settlement systems.

July’s numbers confirm a familiar pattern seen in tokenized assets since 2020 a single standout product creates a surge in volume and attention, but broader market adoption remains elusive. The challenge ahead is whether tokenized stocks can move past this narrow momentum and develop into a sustainable, diversified market offering. Until then, QQQB remains the primary driver behind the recent spike in tokenized trading volume.
