A perpetual decentralized exchange lets you bet long or short with use on assets without owning them outright. Your trades settle through smart contracts, directly from your wallet. But behind this simple concept lie three very different engines.
First, some perp DEXs use on-chain order books matching traders directly against one another. Your counterparty sits right across the table. When markets get turbulent, liquidity can dry up fast, leaving you exposed.
Then there are pooled liquidity venues. Here, depositors fund a pool that automatically takes the other side of your trade, using an oracle price feed. This setup shifts risk to those depositors and hinges entirely on the oracle’s reliability, a dangerous link if the oracle falters during high volatility.
The third style blends these approaches. Matching happens off-chain, while settlement is trustlessly enforced on-chain. This can smooth execution but adds complexity in stress scenarios.
Every perp DEX shares a common risk cycle: margin calls can turn into liquidations, followed by backstops and possibly auto-deleveraging. Knowing your platform’s architecture helps you understand how these risks might unfold far more importantly than comparing yields or fees.
