On July 23, 2026, The Smarter Web Company quietly offloaded 177.89 bitcoin. Not because it was getting cold feet on crypto, but to wipe out a specific debt: $11.69 million owed to TOBAM under a convertible instrument called Smarter Convert. The proceeds went straight to the creditor. No detours.
What makes the timing notable is that the company paid roughly two weeks ahead of schedule. That early repayment eliminated the risk of share dilution that came attached to the convertible instrument. In plain terms: if they hadn't paid in cash, TOBAM could eventually have converted that debt into company shares, watering down existing shareholders. By selling a slice of bitcoin now, the London-listed firm closed that door early.
After the sale, 2,700 BTC remain on the balance sheet. That's more than fifteen times what was sold. So while the headline number sounds dramatic, the actual picture is a company using a small corner of its treasury to settle a liability, then keeping the rest parked. The retained position still leaves the firm heavily exposed to bitcoin's price movements, for better or worse.
It's worth comparing this to how other corporate bitcoin holders operate. Tesla, for instance, holds 11,509 BTC and hasn't touched it in years. The Smarter Web Company's approach is different: it treats its bitcoin stack as a working treasury asset, one that can be tapped when a defined obligation comes due. That's a more active philosophy, though not necessarily a riskier one if the underlying reserves are large enough to absorb the drawdown.
The early repayment also sends a quiet signal about liquidity discipline. When a company can convert a chunk of its crypto reserves into cash on short notice, settle a creditor, and still hold a multi-thousand-coin position, it suggests the treasury strategy has some operational maturity behind it. Whether that discipline holds through a prolonged bitcoin downturn is the real test, and that question stays open.
