Tesla has purchased Virtuix’s Omni One treadmill system, marking the first enterprise sale for Virtuix and a significant step in humanoid robot development. This omnidirectional treadmill allows a human operator to walk, run, and turn naturally while controlling the movement of a robot in real time. Tesla will deploy this advanced setup to refine its Optimus humanoid robots.
The Capabilities Behind the Omni One
The Omni One enables a full-body teleoperation experience, letting users replicate walking, crouching, and turning motions in a simulated environment or directly on physical robots. Its applications span robotics, defense, and even aerospace training. Virtuix has collaborated with NASA to simulate Moon and Mars surface operations, allowing astronauts to practice remotely. The company also partnered with the University of Central Florida on teleoperation projects and is involved with the Nexus NX1 humanoid control system from 1HMX.
Why Tesla Chose Omni One for Optimus
For Tesla, the treadmill offers a controlled and repeatable environment to collect vast amounts of training data. Operators can rehearse navigating spaces, manipulating objects, and overcoming obstacles thousands of times, feeding detailed movement data into machine learning models. This accelerates Optimus’s ability to handle similar tasks autonomously. Beyond training, the system enables precise real-time control: a human walking on the treadmill remotely guides the robot’s movements with accuracy far exceeding conventional joystick methods.
Virtuix's shift from gaming-focused products to enterprise robotics earned them the Auggie Award for Best Interaction Product in July 2026, highlighting their growing impact in AI and robotics fields. Plans to expand sales into Europe reinforce this industrial path. Tesla’s acquisition not only validates Virtuix’s pivot but also signals a new approach in robotic teleoperation and training.
