Tesla has launched a significant update integrating xAI’s Grok AI assistant into its vehicles, allowing drivers to control Spotify, phone calls, climate settings, and even the glovebox using voice commands. This rollout, included in the 2026.26 over-the-air software update, marks a shift toward a more conversational in-car experience, reducing reliance on touchscreens.
Expanded Voice Commands and Requirements
By saying "Hey Grok," Tesla owners can now effortlessly manage various functions without touching the center display. While Grok first appeared in Teslas in mid-2025 with limited navigation commands, the latest update broadens its capabilities considerably. However, the feature requires Teslas equipped with AMD hardware running software version 2025.26 or later, along with either Premium Connectivity or a strong Wi-Fi connection.
The rollout began in the US, then extended to Canada, Australia, and parts of Europe and Asia. The 2026.26 update aims to bring Grok’s expanded features to all European countries and more Asian markets by late July 2026.
Alongside new functions, this update addresses earlier Spotify control issues reported by users, enhancing performance and reliability. Tesla’s move to tie Grok’s full functionality to Premium Connectivity also serves as a subtle nudge for owners to maintain their subscriptions, adding a steady revenue stream.
