One market participant bluntly put it: Strategy is now $9 billion underwater on its massive bitcoin stash. The company, holding 843,775 bitcoins bought at an average of $75,476 each, faces a sharp markdown as the coins’ current market value hovers around $54.8 billion, well below the $63.7 billion paid. This steep decline triggered an $8.22 billion net loss in Q2 2026, primarily due to an $8.32 billion unrealized write-down on its bitcoin holdings.
In a notable shift, Strategy sold bitcoin for the first time in four years, offloading 3,588 coins for $218.4 million. The sale was aimed at funding preferred stock dividends, a move reflecting the company's adjustment to its capital structure. Preferred equity now dominates with $14.4 billion outstanding and annual dividend obligations nearing $1.2 billion. Meanwhile, cash reserves stand at $3.75 billion, enough to cover just over two years of dividend payments.
The company’s core software business barely nudged the headline numbers. Revenue reached $122.39 million, a 6.9% increase year-over-year and close to analyst expectations, with subscription revenue surging 54%. Gross margin held steady at 66.6%. However, these solid software metrics were overshadowed by the bitcoin losses, which define investor sentiment and stock valuation at this point. Strategy’s shares dipped 0.67% in after-hours trading, a subdued reaction that signals the market’s acceptance of the firm as effectively a leveraged bitcoin play rather than a pure software company.
The accounting loss stems from fair-value rules introduced in 2025, which mandate marking digital assets to market prices. This accounting treatment converts unrealized bitcoin depreciation into reported losses, though it does not affect operational cash flow. Strategy has also authorized a program to sell up to $1.25 billion more bitcoin in the future, a signal that managing the preferred dividend burden will remain a priority. Investors will watch closely how this balance of crypto holdings, dividend payments, and software revenue evolves amid a volatile bitcoin market.
