Strategy saw its net losses hit $8.22 billion in the second quarter, reflecting the sharp 14% slide in Bitcoin’s price. This plunge drove an $8.32 billion unrealized write-down on its BTC holdings, underscoring the accounting challenges tied to massive crypto portfolios.
Unrealized Losses Shake Balance Sheets
The company’s bitcoin reserves dropped from roughly $68,000 at April’s start to about $58,600 by June’s end. Despite this, Strategy continued piling up BTC, now holding over 843,000 coins a 25% increase year-to-date. The accounting rules force firms to recognize losses immediately when asset values fall, turning these paper losses into headline figures that rattle investor confidence.
Financial Resilience Amid Volatility
Even with a battered balance sheet, Strategy created a $3.75 billion reserve to safeguard operations for more than two years. The stock price showed resilience, climbing 4.7% during regular trading before easing off in after-hours sessions. This move attempts to balance aggressive accumulation with financial prudence in an unpredictable crypto market.
