The Altcoin Season Index is sitting at 52. That's the number to keep in mind right now, because 75 is where analysts typically draw the line for a confirmed altseason, and the market is still a fair distance from it. What's happening instead is something more surgical: a handful of tokens are moving while the rest tread water.

Bitcoin dominance hasn't budged much. At 58.85%, it continues to absorb a big share of capital that might otherwise flow into smaller coins. The total crypto market cap is around $2.33 trillion, which sounds large, but a closer look shows that BTC is carrying most of that weight. Altcoins, as a group, are still playing catch-up after eight months of underperformance relative to the market leader.

That doesn't mean nothing is moving. A few tokens have quietly printed solid returns over recent weeks, even as the broader altcoin basket stayed flat. This kind of selective price action is actually common in the early stages of a rotation out of Bitcoin: liquidity tends to flow first into large-cap alts like ETH, then gradually trickles down into mid- and small-caps. Right now, that trickle is exactly what it sounds like, cautious and uneven.

For anyone watching charts daily, the frustration is real. Most tokens have spent the better part of 2025 going sideways or drifting lower against BTC. The Altcoin Season Index has oscillated around the 50 mark for months, never quite building the momentum needed to push convincingly above it. Each time sentiment improves and retail interest picks up, BTC dominance holds firm and pulls the index back down.

The selective nature of the current move makes stock-picking logic more relevant than usual. Broad index exposure to altcoins hasn't paid off lately. What has worked is concentrating on projects with genuine catalysts, whether that's a protocol upgrade, a new partnership, or a surge in on-chain activity. Without one of those, most tokens are just noise right now.

Whether the index finally breaks above 75 in the coming weeks depends heavily on Bitcoin's next move. If BTC consolidates rather than pushes to new highs, some of that sidelined capital could rotate. If BTC runs again, dominance climbs further and altcoins wait longer.
