Michael Coates, the new Chief Information Security Officer at the Solana Foundation, has raised alarms about how artificial intelligence is elevating crypto scam risks. According to Coates, AI-generated fake identities and social engineering attacks, rather than traditional smart contract exploits, are becoming the prime threats in blockchain security.
Coates, who previously led security teams at Twitter and Mozilla, pointed out that recent high-profile crypto breaches often stem from weaknesses outside the blockchain itself. Operational security flaws and compromised credentials inherited from Web2 environments are frequently the entry points for hackers. “Adversaries who can irreversibly steal funds will relentlessly hunt for any security lapse,” Coates explained in a recent interview.
He emphasized that the crypto industry must adopt security measures that align with user behavior instead of expecting users to be experts. This includes exploring post-quantum cryptography solutions as the sector braces for quantum computing’s eventual impact. His role at Solana involves collaborating with ecosystem projects and regulators to strengthen cybersecurity standards across the board.
