Shiba Inu holders in the UAE can now spend their SHIB at 30 different retail locations across Dubai's two major airports. Dubai Duty Free, which handles all duty-free shopping at Dubai International Airport and Dubai World Central, rolled out Crypto.com Pay integration, making it the first airport retailer in the Middle East to accept digital currencies at physical checkouts and online.
The move opens SHIB up to millions of annual travelers. Dubai Duty Free processes roughly 80 million passengers yearly across both terminals, giving Shiba Inu a genuine spending use case beyond trading. Eligible UAE residents can pay directly from their Crypto.com wallets using SHIB alongside 29 other supported cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Dogecoin.
The payment flow keeps things simple for the retailer. When a customer pays in crypto, Crypto.com instantly converts it to UAE dirhams at spot rates before settlement, so Dubai Duty Free never holds digital assets and sidesteps volatility risk entirely. The merchant gets fiat, the customer spends their holdings, and the infrastructure handles the swap.
This follows Emirates Airlines launching similar crypto payments through the same Crypto.com Pay system. Both moves signal momentum toward mainstream retail adoption for Shiba Inu in the region, though the airport integration carries more practical weight given the foot traffic and transaction volume involved.
