S&P Global just launched a new index for digital assets that ditches the usual market-cap weighting and tracks blockchain networks by protocol revenue instead. It's a meaningful shift in how a major financial benchmark provider measures the crypto space, and it signals that institutional appetite for fundamentals-based crypto exposure is real enough to act on.

Most existing crypto indexes mirror what you'd find in a passive equity fund: the bigger the market cap, the bigger the weight. Bitcoin and Ethereum dominate, smaller networks barely register, and the index moves with sentiment as much as anything else. Protocol revenue tells a different story. It measures how much economic activity is actually flowing through a network, fees paid by users to validators, liquidity providers, or the protocol itself, which makes it closer to a revenue multiple than a popularity contest.

Why protocol revenue changes the picture

A network can carry a large market cap on little more than narrative momentum. Protocol revenue, by contrast, is harder to fake over time. Solana, for instance, has seen its fee revenue spike during periods of heavy on-chain activity, while some high-cap tokens generate almost nothing on-chain. An index built on that metric would weight those networks very differently than a cap-weighted one would.

S&P's move follows a broader push by traditional finance to get more precise about crypto exposure. BlackRock, Fidelity and others have spent the past year building out crypto product lines, and a fundamentals-grounded benchmark gives asset managers a cleaner story to tell compliance teams and end clients. The index is positioned as an alternative, not a replacement, for existing crypto benchmarks.

No launch AUM figures have been disclosed yet, and it remains to be seen which ETF or structured product providers will license the index first. But the fact that S&P, the firm behind the most-watched equity benchmark on earth, is now publishing blockchain infrastructure data as a standalone index metric says something about where institutional crypto infrastructure is heading.
