S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera Capital have jointly launched the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index, a new benchmark built around protocol fundamentals rather than market cap or price momentum. The index debuted Tuesday via a press release from S&P and was detailed further in Pantera's July Blockchain Letter.
The index opens with 18 constituents, weighted by float-adjusted market cap. Combined, those projects generated over $3 billion in annualized revenue across the trailing two quarters. Named holdings include Hyperliquid, Solana, and Aave. Bitcoin and meme coins are deliberately excluded: the methodology only admits tokens that demonstrate real-world use and produce measurable revenue.
How the screen works
Pantera modeled the eligibility criteria on the S&P 500's own profitability filter, which demands four straight quarters of positive GAAP earnings. For the digital asset version, a protocol must show consecutive quarters of positive revenue above a minimum threshold, confirmed by onchain data from Artemis. There's a second condition: that revenue actually flows back to tokenholders, through buybacks, staking yields net of inflation, direct distributions, or treasuries controlled by token governance.
S&P CEO Cathy Clay framed the methodology as applying "the same standards in trusted benchmarks like the S&P 500" to a fundamentals-driven, economics-based framework powered by Artemis data.
ETFs and broader adoption still ahead
Pantera, which calls itself the first U.S. institutional crypto fund and runs more than $3 billion across passive, hedge, and venture strategies, is positioning the index as groundwork for future financial products. The firm said it has opened talks with asset managers about ETFs and other vehicles tied to the index, and is also in early conversations with financial data providers about adopting it as a flagship industry benchmark. No tracking product has launched yet.
The release sits alongside other recent S&P moves into crypto indexing, including a combined cryptocurrency and crypto-stock index and a tokenized S&P 500 fund built with Centrifuge. This new benchmark is separate from those efforts. Back-tested performance figures cited by Pantera predate the actual launch and, per the firm's own disclosures, carry no predictive value.
Tokens named in the index ticked higher within hours of the announcement.
