Robinhood has officially joined the UK's register of approved cryptocurrency firms, becoming one of just over 50 companies authorized to operate there. The Financial Conduct Authority added the trading platform to its roster on July 31, confirming it meets the country's money-laundering requirements for crypto asset providers.
The approval lands at a key moment. The UK is preparing to launch a full licensing regime for crypto businesses starting in 2027, meaning the window for registration under current rules is closing fast. Robinhood's entry now puts it ahead of competitors scrambling to secure their place before the new framework kicks in.
The company's path to this moment took longer than expected. Robinhood first tried entering the UK market in 2022 by acquiring FCA-registered Ziglu Limited in a deal worth roughly 170 million pounds, but the acquisition fell apart due to valuation disputes and market conditions. The platform then pivoted, launching its own UK entity in 2023 under a waitlist system, with actual trading starting in 2024. Now, after a year of operations, it holds the same regulatory status as heavyweight players like Coinbase-backed Circle, PayPal, BlackRock, Gemini, Bitstamp, and Revolut.
The timing matters because the FCA's current regime focuses primarily on anti-money laundering safeguards. Once 2027 rolls around, the regulator will demand much stricter rules covering consumer protection, operational resilience, and environmental impact. Firms already on the register now gain the advantage of existing relationships with regulators and demonstrated compliance history, which typically smooths the transition to stricter licensing.
Robinhood's approval also signals continued confidence in UK crypto regulation despite ongoing global scrutiny. The Bank of New York Mellon, one of the world's oldest financial institutions, joined the same register just last month on June 22. That kind of traditional finance entry suggests the UK market is genuinely becoming a hub for regulated crypto activity, not just a test run.
